A work of “global manga,” resulting from my collaboration with artist Joana Escoval. The book, presented in the Japanese reading direction (right to left), was drawn digitally using programs popular in anime fandoms, like Comipo! and PaintTool SAI. Sound, by means of the onamatopeias in hiragana (the only text in this "mute" comic), plays a particularly important role in the course of the story.

Based on a dream that Joana had about girls walking in the forest, Autumn portrays the Heroine’s journey and coming-of-age mutations as she follows a Matriarch and her female army among trees, wind, cliffs and ponds. The bright red dresses, the falling leaves, the mushrooms and the light reflected on water surfaces and the girls’ eyes envelop everything in fiery autumnal tones, contrasting with the occasional silences and blank spaces. Ambiguity reigns throughout. Are these advancing girls human, or the hive-minded growths of a larger, fungus-like organism? Are their anachronistic dresses à la Marie-Antoinette cloth garments, or their skin? What is the strange, snake-shaped appendix on the Matriarch’s chest? And what of the black stain on the Heroine’s?

As in any dream, Autumn presents a riddle to be deciphered, quietly revealing its secrets upon closer inspection. Still, the answers may drift away, like a leave in the water current.

Um trabalho de “mangá global”, resultante da colaboração com a artista Joana Escoval. Apresentado na direção de leitura japonesa (direita para a esquerda), este livro foi desenhado digitalmente usando programas populares nas fandoms de animé, como o Comipo! e o PaintTool SAI. O som, através das onamatopeias em hiragana (o único texto nesta BD “muda”), tem um papel particularmente importante no desenrolar da história.

Baseado num sonho da Joana sobre raparigas caminhando pela floresta, Autumn retrata a viagem da Heroína e das suas mutações, à medida que segue uma Matriarca e o seu exército feminino entre as árvores e o vento, penhascos e lagoas. Os vestidos vermelho-vivo, as folhas que caem, os cogumelos e a luz refletida na superfície da água e nos olhos das raparigas tudo envolvem em tons outonais fogosos, contrastando com os ocasionais silêncios e espaços em branco. Ao longo da história, reina a ambiguidade. Serão estas raparigas humanas ou engrenagens num organismo maior, como um fungo? Serão os seus vestidos anacrónicos à la Marie-Antoinette uma peça de vestuário, ou a sua própria pele? O que é o estranho apêndice em forma de cobra no peito da Matriarca? E a mancha preta no da Heroína?

Como qualquer sonho, Autumn apresenta um enigma a ser decifrado, revelando silenciosamente os seus segredos quando o inspecionamos a fundo. Ainda assim, as respostas podem escapar-se, levadas como uma folha nas correntes de água.
