Spookytongue is an existentialist sci-fi comic book in two acts, exploring bodily topographies of emotion through the abject pseudo-science of quantum mysticism. The first half is a visual drabble narrated from the POV of a bioengineered human being designed to gather intelligence on parallel worlds, as their sense of self becomes increasingly shattered and deterritorialized. The second half, composed of yonkoma (“four panel”) comic strips, attempts to map cross-boundary flows by collapsing quantum quackery, Japanese gravure idols, Buddhist teachings, future tectonics and military imagery into an overlong omake of anthropocenic poetics.
I draw on influences such as Tarkovsky’s dreamlike (anti-)science fiction, Blade Runner: The Final Cut (hint: the unicorn!), New Age bullshit and my Tumblr dashboard to weave together this schizoid experience, in pretty shades of yellow and blue. Berated by some as “transhumanist fascist propaganda,” it’s now up to each reader to state their final verdict on Spookytongue.
/Spookytongue é uma banda desenhada de ficção científica existencialista em dois actos, explorando topografias corporais da emoção através da pseudociência abjecta do misticismo quântico. A primeira metade é uma drabble visual narrada do ponto de vista de um ser humano fabricado biogeneticamente para recolher informação sobre mundos paralelos, à medida que o seu sentimento de identidade própria se torna cada vez mais fragmentado e desterritorializado. A segunda metade, composta por comic strips em formato yonkoma ("quatro painéis"), é uma tentativa de mapear fluxos inter-fronteiriços, fazendo colapsar charlatanismo quântico, gravure idols japonesas, ensinamentos budistas, tectónicas futuras e imagens militares num omake distendido de poesia antropocénica.
Baseio-me em influências como a (anti-)ficção científica onírica de Tarkovsky, Blade Runner: The Final Cut (dica: o unicórnio!), misticismo New Age de pacotilha e a minha dashboard do Tumblr para tecer esta experiência esquizoide em aprazíveis tons de amarelo e azul. Acusado por alguns de ser “propaganda trans-humanista fascista”, cabe a cada leitor dar o seu veredito final sobre Spookytongue.
